Asunción – Bella Vista - Cataratas do Iguacu
Day 1: Asunción Arrival at the Asunción Airport and transport to the Hotel. Spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Day 2: Asunción / Cruise Take an afternoon tour and explore the city of Asunción - a city with a million inhabitants and a rather down to earth, original, and provincial feeling instead of a hectic pace. Visit the old train station which boasts the oldest railway in South America (no longer in service), the Panteón, the Government Palace and stroll down the main street „Calle Palma“ with us. Experience a typical South America market atmosphere at the Pettirossi Market and take advantage of the inexpensive shopping. Then drive to the port of Asunción. Here, you will check in and be welcomed on board at 18:00 o’clock. There will be a talk about the program for the coming days, and you will get to know the Guias and her team. At around 19:00, the cruise will begin on the Rio Paraguay. Dinner with a folklore show on board.
Day 3: Cruise We start the day with an amazing sunrise on one of the many branches of the Rio Paraguay. On a photo safari, explore the flora and fauna of the Chaco. After breakfast we will arrive in Villa Hayes. The main source of income for this village is metal diffusion. With a city tour, you will visit the museum. You also have the opportunity to observe the producation of typical Paraguay hand-made craft here. In the evening, you will be expected at the „Captain Dinner“.
Day 4: Cruise/ Asunción After breakfast we visit a typical estancia in the area. Here you can take advantage of the opportunity to go on a photo safari, go horseback riding or boating. Lunch is taken back on board. The afternoon will be spent at your leisure – you can enjoy the passing scenery or relax by the pool. Arrival in Asunción in the late afternoon – check out and transfer to hotel.
Day 5: Asunción – Bella Vista We depart early in the morning to the distant colony of Bella Vista, which was founded 100 years ago by German immigrants. It is located near the third largest river in the world, the Rio Parana. On our way, we will Stop in Villa Florida, a small fishing village with beautiful sandy beaches, and in San Miguel. San Miguel is known for its creative making of ponchos, hammocks, etc. which are still made on old-fashioned looms. If we are lucky, we can see the men and women at work. Just before Bella Vista, we will reach the ruins of the former Jesuit village of Trinidad del Parana. Under the guidance of Spanish Jesuit Padres, the Guarani Indians established in the middle of a then impenetrable jungle a huge complex with towers, ramparts and cathedrals houses for 4,000 people. Experience the magic of this location.
Day 6: Bella Vista – Foz do Iguacu In the morning we visit on of the largest Yerba Mata factories in Paraguay (closed on Saturday, Sunday and holidays) Here, we have the possibility to follow the entire production process (in season) from harvest to the finished product, and a chance to sample the product. Mate is the national drink of Paraguay. No matter where you find yourself in Paraguay, you will see people drinking it with a special tube and cup. Then, we will proceed to the city of Ciuddd del Este (250 km from Bella Vista). There, we start our sightseeing tour. First we tour Itaipu, the largest hydropower plant in the world. A documentary will explain the origins of this giant plant. Afterwords, we take a bus tour to an 8 km wide dam, with a view of an enormous turbine hall inside of the dam. After this, we leave Paraguay, crossing the „Bridge of Friendship“ to Brazil. Hotel in Brazil. Optional evening: Visit the Churrasqueria Rafain + Show (closed Sunday).
Day 7: Foz do Iguacu In the morning, we will visit the Brazilian side of one of the largest waterfalls in the world. The waterfall stands 2700 meters wide, and the water falls 80 meters, creating quite the spectacle. The mist causes a rainbow which stretches over the falls, creating a natural phenomenon not to be missed. Then we will visit the Bird Park. The Bird Park is a private enterprise, situated in one of the most attractive parts of the world: near the Iguaçu Falls in the state of Paraná, Brasil. Rare and colourful birds fly in the huge aviaries which have been built to blend in with the humid subtropical florest. Visitors are able to enter these aviaries and view the birds at close quarters. They will also see alligators, anacondas, pythons, marmosets and butterflies.
Day 8: Foz do Iguacu Today we visit the Argentine side of the falls. For hours you can wander along different paths. If you have had enough walking, you can simply get on the small railway, and drive to the next meeting point. The highlight of the Argentine side is surely the devil`s throat, or „Garganta del Diablo“. You can get there by going along a 1,100 m long metal bridge leading over the River Iguazu. Then drive to the airport.
